Women's Friendsgiving Progressive Dinner

Join us for our 3rd Annual Progressive Dinner: an ode to Friendsgiving!

This is a 3-course meal where each course is eaten at a different location: you and your small group eat appetizers at one house, a main course at another house, and then we all gather together at the church for dessert. You'll be grouped according to your own neighborhood.

Our generous hosts need to have some notice for how many to prepare for, so please RSVP by 10/31/18 and include the name of your neighborhood.

Soul Listening: Week 4

Do you long to hear God speak to your soul as you read His Word?  Would you enjoy a space where you can be honest about where you are spiritually? Sandy Elder and Carol Davis, who spoke at our leaders retreat last Saturday, are offering instruction in a five-week Soul Listening Community (SLC); it will be hosted in the Fellowship Hall. They will be leading women in exercises such as silence and solitude, sacred reading of Scripture, the examen and others.

There will be five consecutive meetings on Saturday mornings October 20 through November 17, 9:15—11:30am. Commitment is so important in building community, that we ask that you attend all 5 sessions. The cost is $90.00, due the first week. (Cash or check, made out to: Soul-listening Community.)

If you have any interest or questions, please email us at:  soullistcomm@gmail.com.

Men's Retreat

Friday, November 2 - Sunday, November 4

Have you ever read the book of Ecclesiastes? If so, then you know the familiar refrain that runs throughout the book: “Vanity of vanities! All is vanity.” The Hebrew word hevel that we translate “vanity” literally means vapor, breath, or smoke. (One scholar actually thinks the meaning is closer to “fart”.) The main point of the book isn’t that life is meaningless, but that like smoke, it’s fleeting. And like smoke, though it might look solid, it will slip through your fingers if you try to grab it.

We’re going to talk “smoke-grabbing” next weekend: Can you name the ways that you are habitually doing this, and the effect it may have on you, your family, and your city in the decades ahead? Of course, we’ll begin and end with what the grace of God in Christ has to do with all of this, and finally, we’ll discuss how we can be a part of building something that will last, ending with a strong challenge to get started immediately with something we’re calling “No Excuses November” (it may not be what you think).

The retreat will be at the West Chester KOA. The cost is $50. Scholarships are available if this cost prevents you from coming. We want you there! Email Stephen Wood at swood@liberti.org if you have questions.

About two years ago, Andrew Sullivan wrote an article for New York magazine called "My Distraction Sickness". He writes, “The tiny cracks of inactivity in our lives are being methodically filled with more stimulus and noise. And yet our need for quiet has never fully gone away, because our practical achievements, however spectacular, never quite fulfill us. They are always giving way to new wants and needs, always requiring updating or repairing, always falling short. The mania of our online lives reveals this: We keep swiping and swiping because we are never fully satisfied."

About 350 years earlier, Blaise Pascal put it this way: “All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit in a quiet room alone.”

And if this doesn't get the point through, Beck sang about it pretty convincingly in his album from last year

Our speakers for this year, Carol Davis & Sandy Elder, will walk us through the importance of stillness & prayer. Carol Davis & Sandy Elder are both trained counselors who have been serving the church for over three decades. They now work together providing workshops on contemplation & prayer groups. Their greatest joys have been growing personally in their faith through practicing classical spiritual disciplines, and seeing others nourish their souls in fresh encounter with Christ through these same practices.

We'd love to have you join us for this year's leader's retreat — breakfast will be provided and snacks will be available throughout the day. Additionally, child care is available if you RSVP. This retreat is required for leaders, but all are welcome to attend! We hope that this time will prepare you for the year of ministry ahead. We are so grateful to serve our church body alongside you, and we hope to see you there!
