As thousands of refugees flee Afghanistan, Philadelphia may receive as many as 10,000 new Afghan neighbors in the coming weeks. Many have already arrived. Below are several ways that we plan to serve them.
What is happening? This Inquirer article breaks down the refugee arrival process, their immediate needs, and some general ways that you can help in the weeks ahead. You may also consider registering for this webinar on Thursday 9/2, organized by Philly-based Nationalities Service Center, to learn about impactful ways to help refugees in our city.
How can we help? In addition to the suggestions linked above, we are specifically working to furnish several homes for these families.
“Compound Impact”, a refugee housing organization founded by Liberti members the Hobelmanns, works with the three major refugee resettlement organizations (Bethany, NSC, and HAIS) to match refugee families with homes. One new family will move in on 10/1/21, but the home is completely unfurnished.
Summer and Beau Rosario are organizing a collection for donated items—beds, linens, toiletries, utensils…everything!—so that the home will be completely furnished by 10/1. The complete wishlist is here — these items will automatically ship to Beau, who will hold everything until it's time to stock the house. Note the items marked "Priority." If you wish to drop off an item directly at the address below, please email beau@philamediaco.com ahead of time so he can coordinate and remove it from the Gift List.
Drop off address: 555 Diamond St, Philadelphia, PA 19125 (“Philamedia”)
How can I pray? Pray for these immigrant families, and for those still in Afghanistan, especially for believers, women, children, the sick, and those who may be targeted by the Taliban. Pray that the Lord will keep these vulnerable from all harm (Psalm 121), that he would raise up the righteous to one day restore their land (Isaiah 58), and that the Afghan people would know and worship the Lord (Psalm 22).
Track with our weekly email to get further info on “Compound Impact” and future housing projects that we need your help with. In the meantime, contact larry@liberti.org with any questions.
